Le groupe OTEP est formé de quatre personnes : la chanteuse Otep Shamaya, le guitariste Aaron Nordstrom, le batteur Brian Wolff et le bassiste "Evil" J. McGuire. Leur deuxième album, House of Secrets, produit par Greg Wells aux studios Rocket Carrousel à Los Angeles, est sortit le 27 juillet 2004. OTEP a participé à l'Ozzfest en 2001, 2002 et 2004.
Le groupe s'est formé à la fin 2000 en Californie. Il s'est ensuite fait remarquer par Sharon Osbourne qui a été assez impressionnée pour offrir à OTEP la possibilité de jouer à l'Ozzfest de 2001. Pendant ce temps, le groupe n'avait aucun contrat. Leur premier label a été Capitol Records avec lequel ils ont effectué l'album Sevas Tra en 2002.
Pour leur album House of Secrets la groupe a décidé de recruter le producteur Greg Wells qui a récemment travaillé avec les Deftones.
En novembre 2006, OTEP a commencé une tournée pour promouvoir leur nouvel album intitulé "The Ascension."
En juillet 2007, Otep a annoncé qu'il quittait le label Capitol records.
Le dernier album d'Otep "The Ascention" est sorti le 30 octobre 2007

En janvier 1995, Shawn Crahan (batteur), Anders Colsefini (chanteur), Paul Gray (bassiste), Donnie Steele et Kun Nong (guitaristes), 5 musiciens de la région de Des Moines, fondent un groupe déstiné d'après eux à « tout casser ». Dès le mois de février, Kun quitte le groupe pour des raisons encore inconnues ; il sera remplacé en septembre par Josh Brainard. Shawn, lassé d'être batteur et ayant en tête l'idée d'en avoir trois dans le groupe (un batteur principal et deux se servant de drumkit pour rendre le groupe plus agressif musicalement et visuellement), décida de laisser sa place à Joey Jordison pour se consacrer aux percussions, aidé de Anders. Le groupe se produisit tout d'abord sous plusieurs noms tels que Meld, The Pales Ones ou PyGSYSTEM, avant d'opter pour Slipknot provenant de l'anglais knot signifiant n½ud et de slip signifiant glissant, formant ainsi n½ud coulant.
